The person must drink and/or take their accustomed drug(s) every day. They are beside themselves or are generally in an aggravated state to one degree or another if they do not take intoxicants every day. You notice that they only hang around other people who drink, smoke and take drugs a lot. They may have some friends who they used to be very close to who don't drink heavily or take drugs but they don't spend much time with them anymore. It has become "OK" to smoke or drink or take drugs in front of children, to speak and act abusively in front of strangers, et c. Addicts avoid certain persons and social situations that require them to be sober or to act with civility towards others.

People who subconsciously don't think of themselves as heavy drinkers or drug users frequently gravitate towards a convivial and merry type of lifestyle where they entertain frequently. In plain English, they are the "party animals"! When people think of party animals they think of clubbers and ravers and wild get-togethers. But often they become the connaisseurs and gourmands, treasuring pricey labels and having lots of dinner parties complete with fine foods, cocktails, wine or beer and after dinner drinks to keep the high going. On the surface this seems perfectly harmless and even enviable and desirable, but when you look closer into the lives of those living in such homes, or who are constantly partying, you will find unmistakable evidence of various types of more subtle, more "refined" destructive behaviors such as neglect, humiliating others, co-dependency, various types of psychological terror tactics, devious forms of manipulation and control over others, and in general the more subtle forms of cruelty and wickedness. Also depression, wildness or animalistic behaviors, suicidal or homicidal impulses and neuroses of many sorts.

These are only some of the signs and indications that there may be substance abuse and "people abuse" problems starting. Generally the decision is more of an obvious one and the issue is more about beginning a dialogue with the person to begin their recovery--working together and with professional support.
