Classical Homeopaths, such as Yours Truly, share a unique body of knowledge inherent in the fundamentals of Homeopathy (pronounced: home' + ee + ah" + pa + thee ). Classical Homeopaths discourage people from taking more than one remedy at a time, because every substance has a medicinal effect on people, be it an herb, a metal, a chemical or whatever. We do this partly to keep the person free from artificial symptoms which these substances would add to the natural symptoms of the complaint and make it more difficult to find the correct remedy to help the person.

Another important reason to take only one remedy at a time is to avoid the polypharmacy effect of remedies interacting, antagonizing and antidoting each other. Lastly, the only scientific method is to use one remedy at a time otherwise you don't know for sure what remedy is creating what effect. These are the main reasons why only one remedy at a time is a must when employing the classical homeopathic methods taught by Hahnemann. The single most similar remedy is found which matches the physical, emotional and mental symptoms of the person. We call this remedy the similimum. This is one of many principles which makes homeopathy such an holistic and scientific healing system.

Yes, every substance can create symptoms in a person, especially if the substance is medically active in the crude state or the person is sensitive to that particular substance or sensitive to medicines and things in general!

Homeopaths have a simple, unique and scientific way of determining the medicinal properties of a substance, called provings, in which basically healthy people volunteer to participate in an experiment to discover the properties of a single substance which is prepared in dynamic, non-physical form (Homeopathy is a system of energetic or biodynamic healing and is not a system of minute dosages, which actually works by stimulating your vital force, your natural healing powers, into more powerful and efficient activity through the administration of the carefully and individually selected similimum, which is prepared in dynamic, or energetic form.). Homeopathy is actually a system of energetic medicine. Remedies contain nothing other than pure energy of a particular quality (the individual remedy's essence) and quantity (the potency of the dynamically prepared medicine), employing either sugar pellets or alcohol solutions as the vehicle of this energy which is transferred to the patient when the remedy is administered directly stimulating the Vital Force.

Homeopaths compile their knowledge of the healing power of remedies from three sources: provings, poisoning reports from unfortunate cases of accidents, suicides et c. and from the clinical results of ailments cured after taking a remedy. According to the Law of Similars (Similia Similibus Curentur, Latin for "Let Likes Cure Likes"), if you take a remedy that is similar to your symptoms it acts curatively and eliminates your symptoms but, if you do not have the symptoms which that substance can produce and you are taking that substance repeatedly--and it is medically active--(for example, alcohol, St. John's Wort, Ginkgo, coffee et c.), then you are, in effect, implanting the symptoms of the substance on yourself or conducting an informal "proving" of that substance on yourself! Or in plain English, if you use medically active substances repeatedly, you begin to poison yourself with them!

Homeopaths have compiled the data from provings, poisonings and clinically cured symptoms and organized them into materia medicas and repertories for easy reference. Materia medicas are organized by remedies and repertories are organized by symptoms. After nearly two centuries of compiling the symptoms and curative powers of thousands of substances, homeopaths certainly can agree on one thing: that all substances can produced symptoms in people, especially when they are known to be active in the crude, undiluted state or where there is a specific sensitivity to the substance in the individual and/or the person is sensitive to things generally. This is especially true for potencies which are more powerful than the tincture level of the remedy. This is as true for herbs and drugs as it is for alcohol and mercury to name a few common examples of substances effecting peoples' health today.

So, please be very careful what you put into or allow to be put into your body; it may effect you more than you realize! If you are in doubt about whether a natural, non-prescription substance that you are taking is producing symptoms in you, look up the substance first in a homeopathic materia medica and see if it is there. That will list most of the symptoms that can be caused by overdosing on that substance. If it is a prescription substance, then refer to your Medical Doctor and his or her Physician's Desk Reference. Various explanations have been offered by various writers on Homeopathy as to how the medicines actually work; and these explanations differ quite a bit. From my basic point of view, there isn't a great need for a lot of complex theorizing as to how the actual laws of physics apply, or need to be updated is more like it--physics has yet to fully acknowledge the Law of Similars. And for Homeopaths who use its power of stimulating the Vital Force every day, it is just as common and ordinary as the law of gravity. You don't even think about it. You just use it as a healing tool.

Samuel Hahnemann taught that symptoms are in fact a complete expression of the disease. Their production by the Vital Force is actually the healing process itself, powered by whatever vitality is present in the patient at the time. Some have very strong healing powers, and they generally don't need a homeopathic remedy as their systems can cure themselves without assistance. Most people in modern society have weakened immunity and recuperative powers today due to pollution, synthetic foods and products used...
